Borrowed Photons

In times of inclement weather (which accounts for most of the year) I process a lot of publicly available astronomical data for practice and interest. There is plenty of interesting free data available if you know where to look and how to use it but often you can get more accessible and high quality data for the equivalent cost of a cup of decent coffee. There are many superb astrophotographers out there giving access to their data and expertise via their Patreon sites as well as commercial setups with robotic telescope networks around the world. Nothing beats processing photons you have captured yourself with your own kit but a lot of the inevitable frustrations can be meliorated by practising on other's data and learning from the experts. Nothing wrong with practising while you wait for good weather, clear skies and your developing collection of kit.
